‘Under Wraps’ is perhaps one of Jethro Tull’s most misunderstood albums. For this album, the band fully embraced the electronic and synth-pop sounds of the 1980s, focusing heavily on keyboards, drum machines and polished, synthetic production. Reflecting on this period later, Ian Anderson said, “We wanted to do something completely different with Under Wraps. It was about exploring the technology of the time and seeing how far we could take our sound into new territories. It was an experiment, and not everyone was ready for that kind of change from Jethro Tull”. Tracks such as 'Lap of Luxury' demonstrate Anderson's efforts to combine his lyrical storytelling with the cold and often detached soundscapes of the era. This created a distinctive, albeit controversial, chapter in their discography, and the album has since been recognised for its bold experimentation, reflecting Anderson's commitment to artistic exploration despite the potential risk to the band's established identity.
