Few bands can claim to be as influential as Mercyful Fate. As one of the early purveyors of true metal, the band has had a far-reaching impact, influencing everyone from the new wave of black metal bands Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir to international metal giants Megadeth and Metallica.

The Mercyful Fate compilation The Beginning was originally released through Roadrunner Records in 1987. It collects their early, rare material, such as the 'Nuns Have No Fun' EP, BBC sessions and alternative versions of tracks from their 'Melissa' album. This showcases the band's raw, occult-infused metal roots before their split in 1985. This essential release showcases the pioneering sound that influenced black metal.
