Formed in Umeå, Sweden in 1987, Meshuggah was named "one of the top ten hard and heavy bands" by Rolling Stone and has earned the respect and admiration of fans and musicians alike. The long journey from Sweden to Ozzfest began with their first release, usually referred to as Psykisk Testbild (roughly translated as "Psychological Test Picture"), although it doesn't actually have a title. Like their music, Meshuggah's early history remains a mystery, but vocalist/guitarist Jens Kidman, guitarist Fredrik Thordendal and bassist Peter Nordin put out this vinyl release sometime around 1989. Drummer Tomas Haake joined shortly thereafter, and the band began writing for their first album, Contradictions Collapse.
A period of change followed. Kidman put aside the guitar to concentrate on his vocals, and Haakes
Haake's school friend Mårten Hagström joined the band. Contradictions Collapse was followed by two EPs (None and the now out-of-print Selfcaged), the brilliant and critically acclaimed Destroy, Erase, Improve, and the EP True Human Design. shortly thereafter. The band's next milestone was 1998's monumental album Chaosphere, which opened the door to extensive touring with big names and numerous prestigious festival appearances around the globe. Although the band was already planning to retire into seclusion to work on the next studio record, they snagged a spot on what was probably the most coveted tour of the year - OZZFEST - juggling System of a Down, P.O.D., Down and Mushroomhead on the off days. The band spent the months leading up to the festival spending every waking moment working on nothing.... literally. The most intense six weeks of the band's professional and personal lives, spent at Dug-Out Studios with Daniel Bergstrand (Stuck Mojo, In Flames), Area 51 and Fear and Loathing Studios, resulted in the masterpiece known henceforth as Nothing. After the mathematical precision on Chaosphere, the band chose a more straightforward approach and created the heaviest album of their career.
In 2022, this masterpiece will be re-released in stunning new vinyl colors colors (limited to 500 copies per color worldwide) to fulfill every collector's dream. collector's dream come true.
