Produziert von Rob Cavallo, war American Idiot ein Konzeptalbum, das zu einem der am höchsten gelobten und kommerziell erfolgreichsten Alben von Green Day wurde und in mehreren Ländern die Charts anführte, darunter in den USA, Großbritannien, Kanada und Australien. Das Album enthält auch die Singles American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, Wake Me Up When September Ends und Boulevard of Broken Dreams, das 2006 mit dem Grammy Award für die beste Platte des Jahres ausgezeichnet wurde.
Am 25. Oktober wird Warner Records das 20-jährige Jubiläum des Albums mit der Veröffentlichung von American Idiot (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) in verschiedenen Formaten feiern: 4CD/2 Blu-Ray Box; 8LP Color Vinyl/ 2 Blu-Ray Box und eine 2LP Red & Black Vinyl.
