MERCILESS' erstes Album The Awakening erblickte 1990 das Licht der Welt. Es war auch die allererste Veröffentlichung auf Euronymous' damals neu gegründeten, berüchtigten Label Deathlike Silence Productions. Vor ihrem legendären Death/Thrash-Meisterwerk nahmen MERCILESS zwei Demos auf, Behind the Black Door und Realm of the Dark. Beide wurden 1987 bzw. 1988 veröffentlicht und sind von Natur aus eher rohe Angelegenheiten, aber was ihnen an Können und Klangqualität fehlen mag, machen sie durch ungezügelte Wildheit und den jugendlichen Enthusiasmus von MERCILESS wieder wett.
