The Berliners present an unusual live album that is a testament to strange times: their Phanerozoic concept album, performed live in its entirety when there were no other concerts. On 25 September 2020, in the midst of the global pandemic, The Ocean released their 9th studio album "Phanerozoic II", the concluding episode of a concept trilogy that had begun 13 years earlier with "Precambrian" - and even without any touring to support the new album release, "Phanerozoic II" entered the official German album charts at #9.

With no end to the closures in sight, the band decided to thank their fans for their support with 2 streaming concerts, playing both "Phanerozoic" albums in full: "Phanerozoic I" was streamed live from Pier 2, a large hall in Bremen harbour, on 25 March 2021. With more than 1,500 tickets sold, it was the most successful show of the popular streaming event series "Club 100" to date.
The day after this event, the band retreated to synthesiser and sound designer Peter Voigtmann's rural studio "Die Mühle", just outside Bremen. Here the band rehearsed and recorded "Phanerozoic II" in its entirety over the following 3 days. The performance was broadcast on 16 April as part of the digital edition of the Roadburn Festival, which this year was called Roadburn Redux.

The two performances could not have been more different: While the first featured a pompous, mesmerising light show on a large stage, the second was the exact opposite: intimate, almost cosy, more focused on musicality than performance. A reduced set-up in a dark barn, with atmospheric, minimal but no less efficient lighting.
