On the third regular PAYSAGE D'HIVER album “Die Berge”, band leader Wintherr has perfectly captured the dark side of his alpine homeland. Far removed from kitschy postcard landscapes, the album is dominated by jagged peaks that have been squeezed out of the thin, cold crust of this planet by unimaginable tectonic forces. These gray giants create a harsh, inhuman environment that finds its musical echo in the rough black metal of the Swiss. Note for note, the majestic power of the mountains unfolds, threatening and dangerous, but also of wild beauty. The enormous songs on “Die Berge”, which pile up to a playing time of over 100 minutes, are reminiscent of the mountainous sources of their inspiration through their epic length alone.
