MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS was released for the first time on 24 October 1995 and immediately reached number 1 in the Billboard Top 200 charts. The album, which subsequently went nine times platinum in the USA, spawned several major hits, including Bullet With Butterfly Wings , curiously the band's first Top 40 hit, the exquisite 1979 and the epic Tonight, Tonight as well as a whole series of highly inspired video clips. The album was produced by BILLY CORGAN, Flood and Alan Moulder. The album was honoured with a Grammy Award (1996 in the category Best Hard Rock Performance for Bullet With Butterfly Wings) and was nominated for a total of seven. Beyond its hit qualities, MELLON COLLIE stands out as an impressive song cycle of unusual depth and remarkable stylistic range. It is quite simply a marvellous collection of enchantingly beautiful moments.
